"The Wily Witness" by Hy Conrad

Solve-it #344 - July 2010

Previously published Sept. 1997

Previous Solve-it

The Fun E. Burglar

The Solution

Whom does Trudy suspect?

Binky Quaker

How other people responded:

20% said Jay Wiggins
30% said Binky Quaker
25% said Mary Quaker
25% said Not Sure

The Explanation

How does she know it wasn't an accident?

The killer had to be Binky Quaker.

The killer had to be Binky Quaker. The only evidence of the killer's presence in the bedroom was the water ring on the table. The offending glass had a base the size of a quarter, much too small for a crystal water glass, a brandy snifter or a beer mug. Just the right size for a shot glass, however.

If Althea had tripped on the soap, it wouldn't have wound up right by the railing. It would have been pushed backward. Therefore, the soap was a decoy, planted there to make it look like an accident.
